Cody Weaver Named Morris Family Scholarship Honoree-
The Iowa PGA Foundation Morris Family Scholarship committee has selected Cody Weaver of Gilman, Iowa as the 2026 Morris Family Scholarship honoree.
When asked what this means to win, Weaver responded with, “Receiving this scholarship is truly an honor and a privilege. It means a lot that the scholarship committee has trusted me to represent their scholarship program, and I will strive to make them proud as I go off to college and beyond. Thank you to the Morris Family Scholarship Committee for the incredible generosity.”
Over the next four years, he will attend the University of Iowa to study Business Administration and play on the men’s golf team. He plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree from the well-respected Tippie College of Business. Weaver also intends to contribute to the golf team and develop his skills as a player. After college, his goal is to pursue professional golf; if that path isn’t available for him, his other career options include running the family farm business with his dad, becoming an accountant, or starting his own business.
Weaver has had a golf club in his hand since he could walk, and it has always been central to his life. Every summer, he would spend hours at the course practicing golf. Throughout his youth, he has participated in local, state, and national tournaments, competing with players at the junior, amateur, and professional levels. Golf is his passion and influences many aspects of his life.
Golf is shaped who he is. It has taught him how to control his emotions, put himself in work, and create new relationships. Golf is a challenging sport, both physically and mentally. It is a sport based on failure, and learning to fail is one of the greatest lessons it has taught him. In golf, just like life, you will get bad breaks. Learning to respond to the bad breaks and control what you can control is another vital lesson from the game. Golf is also a sport where you get out what you put in. Long days on the range, on the putting green, and out on the course are the keys to success. It has taught him discipline and hard work, which help to open opportunities for success. You’re not going to hit the ball perfectly every time, and learning to respond and move on to the next shot is critical. The sport has provided new connections to many different golfers, like himself, throughout the state and across the country.
Golf has and always will play a huge role in his life and future. As previously stated, his goal is to become a professional golfer and play the game for a living; however, if that is not the path for him, golf will still be a huge part of his life. Weaver wants to continue to compete at the highest level he can, while also growing the game in the process. It is important to leave the game better than we find it. His ultimate goal is to pass on the game to the next generation and help pave the way for all the golfers to come. This is the most beautiful game in the world and has significantly shaped who he is today.
Throughout high school, Weaver has also participated in football, basketball, baseball, FFA, and FCA. In football, he was a 3-time letterwinner and All-District his senior year. In basketball, he was also a 3-time letterwinner and All-Conference his senior year. He participated in baseball in his freshman year and earned a varsity letter. His leadership ability is demonstrated in these activities where he was a Captain on the football, basketball, and golf teams. He helped to push his teammates to grow individually for the betterment of the overall team. He used a mix of constructive criticism and demonstrated it himself, while also celebrating his teammates on a job well done when appropriate. Outside of sports, his leadership can be seen in the classroom by being engaged, asking questions, and leading group projects. Additionally, he has shown leadership in our FCA chapter by giving multiple lessons throughout the school year.
Trish Dobson, East Marshall High School, English Department/Model Teacher/Mentor, “Throughout high school, Cody has achieved more than most students. He has participated in numerous sports, taken many college courses, and participated in extracurricular activities all while maintaining a perfect grade point average. As a freshman, Cody walked into my room, and I did not know what to expect, other than the freshmen class was a bit squirrelly. Although at times, immaturity did show, Cody never missed an assignment and always participated in discussion. I could see his maturity behind the facade he had in place.”
