How to Apply for Iowa PGA Foundation Scholarships-
Riverside, Iowa – The Iowa PGA Section Foundation annually awards one Charlie Burkart Scholarship, Career Advancement Scholarship, Women’s Fairway Scholarship and Max Shields Scholarship.
Charlie Burkart Scholarship (Deadline – June 15, 2025)
The Iowa PGA Foundation annually awards a college scholarship in memory of Charlie Burkart, PGA member for 49 years and Head PGA Professional at the Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids for 42 years. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students in furthering their education. At least one high school graduate will be the 2024 Scholarship recipient in the amount of $1,500 per year for four years. Other previously graduated applicants will be reviewed with additional scholarships awarded when possible.
Any graduating high school senior or previous graduate residing within the boundaries of the Iowa PGA Section and the State of Iowa is eligible to apply. The Iowa PGA Section is bounded on the west by U.S. Highway 71 and includes an area of Western Illinois from a point north of Quincy, east to near Springfield and directly north. It includes the major cities of Monmouth, Macomb, Galesburg, Moline, Rock Island, Kewanee and Galena. It does not include the cities of Freeport, Springfield or Quincy.

Career Advancement Scholarship (Deadline – September 10, 2025)
The Iowa PGA Section Foundation annually awards a career advancement scholarship to assist individuals in furthering their education toward career development. Applicants who are interested in pursuing a career in the golf industry or other career requiring educational training are welcome to apply for a one year $1,000 scholarship.
Any previous high school graduate residing within the boundaries of the Iowa PGA Section and the State of Iowa is eligible to apply. The Iowa PGA Section is bounded on the west by U.S. Highway 71 and includes an area of Western Illinois from a point north of Quincy, east to near Springfield and directly north. It includes the major cities of Monmouth, Macomb, Galesburg, Moline, Rock Island, Kewanee and Galena. It does not include the cities of Freeport, Springfield or Quincy.
Scholarship winners are selected based on their experience and activity in golf, their future career goals, leadership skills and financial need.

Women’s Fairway Scholarship (Deadline – September 10, 2025)
Lisa wishes to share her wonderful career, experience and “firsts in Iowa Golf” with all women looking to become a PGA Professional and further their golf career. She and her spouse Sher, want to improve the opportunities for women in golf and increase the percentage of women in golf leadership positions through women golfers seeking membership in the PGA of America. The Iowa PGA Section Foundation annually awards one Women’s Fairway Scholarship to assist females in furthering their education and training toward a career in golf, pursuing membership with the PGA of America. Qualified, interested females are welcome to apply. The Women’s Fairway Scholarship is funded by Master PGA Professional Lisa Miller, the first female PGA member in the Iowa PGA Section and by her spouse Sharon Hawn a lifelong educator, public health professional and avid golfer.

Max Shields Scholarship (Deadline – September 10, 2025)
Max Shields was born on December 1, 1931, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He passed on Sunday, August 15, 2021, at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1950. On March 10, 1951, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Allgood in Oskaloosa. Max played golf as a youngster in Oskaloosa winning several state-wide junior golf events. He was medalist for several Oskaloosa High School events. He was a member of the Oskaloosa team that finished 2nd in the state championship at Cedar Rapids Country Club in 1948. He competed in the National Junior Championship and lost in the quarterfinals. He won the Oskaloosa Men’s City Championship three times.
