 THE MORRIS FAMILY STORY

The Morris Family Golf Scholarship is supported and funded by the Morris family, friends, and business partners. The Morris Family has and still are an integral part of the Cedar Rapids and Marion surrounding communities since the early 1950’s. The introduction and passion for golf began with Waldo Morris who loved and played the game for well over 50 years. Waldo, and two friends, purchased and operated St. Andrews 9-hole Golf Course in Cedar Rapids in the 1970’s.  A short time after, they expanded their vision when purchasing and developing an additional 9-holes offering an 18-hole facility. St Andrews soon became a popular and all are welcome golf and clubhouse destination.  The course became the home to new golfers, family and company outings, and avid golfers enjoying the game of golf and comradery. Waldo, his grandson Jared Morris, and two-family friends still hold the 18-hole course record.  Even though Waldo had played golf courses around the world including the original St Andrews in Scottland, known as the “Home of Golf,” he always thought of and wanted his St Andrews to be a home for anyone who loved the game.

Many years later, Waldo’s grandson Jared Morris at age 12 got his first job at St Andrews and the rest is history. After mowing the greens and any and all other tasks Mike Hall, PGA Golf Professional asked of Jared, he would find himself with a club in his hands.  When Jared was not in school or playing other sports, he could be found on a golf course. Life lessons learned along the way and the friendships made on the course are still strong today.  The love of the game bridged three generations with Waldo’s son Jon, also known as Jared’s dad, starting to play together.  They played in fundraising events, best man tournaments, and loved to revisit every golf hole played, the good, the bad, and the ugly golf shots of the day.  Jared’s uncle, cousins, and many more family members and friends now enjoy golf.

The fourth generation of Morris golf and one of Jon and Jared’s favorite golfing partners is Hayley Morris.  She is enjoying success in high school golf and the Iowa PGA Junior Tour.  Through following their daughter each summer on the Iowa PGA Pee Wee Tour, then the Iowa PGA Junior Tour, Jared and Heather Morris learned about the Iowa PGA Foundation and the programs they support for youth and junior golf.  They became increasingly thankful and appreciative of opportunities available and wanted to find a way to contribute.

This four-generation passion for golf, the desire to continue to give back, and the appreciation for the opportunities available through the Iowa PGA Section & Foundation have led to the creation of the Morris Family Scholarship.
