Rempe Named Career Advancement Scholarship Recipient–
Riverside, Iowa – Karissa Rempe of Colo, Iowa has been named the 2024 Iowa PGA Career Advancement Scholarship winner by the Iowa PGA Scholarship Committee. The Iowa PGA Section Foundation annually awards a career advancement scholarship to assist individuals in furthering their education toward career development. Applicants who are interested in pursuing a career in the golf industry or other career requiring educational training are welcome to apply for a one year $1,000 scholarship.
When asked on what this means to win, Rempe responded with, “Being highly motivated to pursue a new career, this scholarship allows me to have a bit more freedom and flexibility as I continue through the PGM program. It means a lot to me that others believe in me and are willing to support me in this journey. “
Rempe has been working in the golf industry seasonally for the last 7 years while also working as a teacher and a coach. The summers of 2018, 2019, and 2020 she worked at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa. While working there, she was employed in many areas of the club including Food and Beverage and Golf. While she enjoyed her time working for the Food and Beverage area, Golf was what she really enjoyed. She helped with the Junior Golf Academy under the direction of the rest of the full-time golf staff. She also worked in the bag room doing daily operational tasks such as cleaning clubs and carts, and preparing practice facilities for members to use.
The summers of 2021-2023, she worked at the Ames Golf and Country Club assisting with Junior Golf Academy, PGA Jr. League, and Pro Shop duties. In addition, she coached Varsity Boys and Girls Golf for Colo-NESCO/Collins-Maxwell from 2021-2024. Beginning in June of 2024, she switched to full time as an Assistant Golf Professional and began her coursework for the Qualifying Level online. She has since completed the Qualifying Level, and have begun Level 1 Coursework and hoping to participate in the Level 1 Seminar in October.
In the future she hopes to become either a PGA Head Professional or General Manager at a golf course, continuing to coach and teach golf as she does so. Teaching has been a part of my life since 2011 when she began her undergrad degree in Elementary Education. She has a desire to grow the game of golf in two ways, teaching Juniors and teaching women to play the game that she loves. There are multiple programs available for teaching Juniors the game. However, a lot of times, the cost is high, both for the instruction and the equipment, which makes it difficult for a lot of kids to join in. Her hope is to make golf accessible for all kids who want to participate in golf instruction. She also wants to create an environment in which women feel comfortable beginning to play golf without fear of judgment when they are struggling.
Michael Boeve of Colo-NESCO Elementary Principal has these nice words to say, “I believe Karissa demonstrates a high level of integrity. She has made great decisions throughout her life and has overcome many challenges. She is kind, caring, and compassionate towards others. I am very proud of Karissa and excited to see where the next chapter of her life takes her.”
The Iowa PGA Congratulates Karissa Rempe as our 2024 Iowa PGA Career Advancement Scholarship winner.
